This map (courtesy, Prelinger Library) is a good way to visualize how much of the city burned after the earthquake/fire of 1906. It of course led to the building of refugee camps around the city, including in Mission (now “Dolores”) Park.

Rumor had it that when they moved the cemeteries to Colma, many times, the workers were lazy and ONLY moved the headstones – leaving the bodies where they lay. Then when they remodeled the golf course (or added buildings to the USF campuses), they’d find bones and such. Not sure if that’s a true story, but hell – makes for good rumors. 😉
